An Assassins Novel

Thriller

BOOK SUMMARY:
A sexy new thriller about love and revenge from the author of the Capital Confessions and International School series…
X lives by three rules: Show no weakness. Trust no one. Don’t get caught. She lives by the rules they gave her.
The Academy—set in London, shrouded in secrecy—it trains spies, computer experts, and assassins. Their mission? Dispensing justice and altering the course of world politics. Or so they think. In a world where secrets are weapons and some kills are impossible to forget, everything X thought she knew about her life is about to change.
They taught her to fight. To blend into the shadows like a ghost, to operate on the fringes of society, to change her identity with ease. They taught her to kill.
She’ll need every skill they taught her, to stay alive.

My Review:

Between Shadows lures us into a world of secrecy, danger, and takes us on dark twists and turns leaving us guessing who is good and who is evil. Each page builds up anticipation, fear, worry, and fills our minds with questions of trust and loyalty.

Cleeton impressed me with the telling of this story, my heart pounded, I felt as if something would jump right out in front of me a few times. Thrillers are not my typical read but I do enjoy them on occasion and Chanel Cleeton knocked this one out of the park.

X was such an amazing character, in the first few pages, I was hooked, I had to know more about this girl, this asassin, this unknown identity and I was lured into falsehoods with ideas about just who and what she was. Some things I was dead right on, others I missed the mark, but the things I could say for sure, X wasn't someone I would want to go up against and she wasn't what was expected of her either to anyones standards. I loved that X was written as such a strong female character who is in a somewhat unusual situation, most of the stories with similar backgrounds are male based, so I loved that Cleeton chose to showcase a female asassin.

X finds herself questioning things a little bit more and more, she's felt danger lurking, a silent watcher who she can't see but feels, a coldness she can't quite explain. But things start to pull together when she reaches the office and is given her next assignment, and the shocking partner she'll be working with, Luke, an academy member she has a twisted history with.

Between shadows is an adventure, a thrill a minute that will keep you on your toes and having you thinking fast just like the characters within. You will cringe when you think about what could happen, and you will find it hard to trust anyone, find it hard to believe there could be good found within.

There's a little extra humanity within the story though, with X's love for her sister, and her connection and attachment to Luke. Though this book is not really a full on love story, there are romantic elements throughout which add a little softness to the hard edge of the rest of the story. The chemistry is so hot between these two and the build up of tensions as they try to work through everything going on just enhances that chemistry. There's a special draw to see these two figure things out both personally and professionally.

I loved each twist and turn, we are taken on, each wild thought, each dangerous moment, and how it all gives us more insight into both the characters and the Academy itself.

I know this series is going to continue to be amazing, and I can't wait to learn more as more books unfold the mysteries of the Academy and all it stands for.

AUTHOR INFORMATION:

Originally a Florida girl, CHANEL CLEETON moved to London where she received a bachelor’s degree from Richmond, The American International University in London and a master’s degree from the London School of Economics and Political Science. Chanel fell in love with London and planned to stay there forever, until fate intervened on a Caribbean cruise and a fighter pilot with smooth dance moves swept her off her feet. Now, a happily ever after later, Chanel is living her next adventure.

Law school made Chanel realize she’d rather spend her days writing sexy stories than in a courtroom, and she hasn’t looked back since. An avid reader and hopeless romantic, she’s happiest curled up with a book. She has a weakness for handbags, her three pups, and her husband.

Chanel writes contemporary romances, women’s fiction, and thrillers. She is published by Harlequin HQN, Penguin/InterMix, and Penguin/Berkley and is the author of the International School, Capital Confessions, and Wild Aces series.
